Alexandria, Virginia: Time Life Books, 1983. A gorgeous, pristine 2-volume set. No previous owner's name. No remainder marks. Bright, clean, square, tight, and unmarked. Sharp corners. Fresh and crisp, obviously never read. Handsomely bound in full, brown leatherette that is gilt stamped, and embossed with a longhorn design. With a silk ribbon marker built into each volume. Attractive marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Two uniformly bound volumes in the Classics of the Old West series. Each volume is illustrated with tinted plates. The two frontispieces depict San Francisco, the first in 1848, the second in 1849. Viewed in juxtaposition, the two show the city's rapid growth in only a year. See: Zamorano 80, 73: "Taylor saw everything and recorded all he saw." Howes T43 [Final Edition T45]: "Unexcelled description of California's gold-rush days by a professional traveler and trained observer."
