FROM THE DUST JACKET FLAP: Flags carried by Confederate troops during the Civil War between the States not only promoted morale but were symbols of the Southern people united in a common association. They played an important organizing role on the field of battle, since waving colors were often the only visible points in a dusty, smokey battlefield around which a commander could rally his troops. National, State, company7, and standard regimental colors were used during the war; the purpose of this book is to present examples of different surviving patterns and some of the unique company designs. Many are tattered and torn and in very poor condition, but these illustrations show the flags as they might have been carried. They include every known detail of the original flag. To keep the flag flying was a matter of extreme pride, and its loss to the enemy was a deep regret. Hundreds of men died defending these flags, and hundreds more died trying to capture them. The battle flags of the Confederacy are indeed proud relics of a cause for which thousands of men gave their lives.
