The last volume in the trilogy of the witty, fashionable and divorced proprietress Emma McChesney in her job from stenographer, then drummer, traveling saleslady to owner of her own business. Her first business was Roast Beef, Medium and her second Personality Plus. Edna Ferber was first successful with these volumes and then went on to pen Show Boat, Giant and other popular stories. Jock, Emma's son, settled to Chicago with his new wife. Emma continues her business selling in South America and shows she has not lost her wits and charms. Emma finds love, keeping up a business and all others. Emma signifies the superlative woman in the early 20th century as she is brilliant, strong, amiable, and broadminded.

The story includes chapters on Broadway to Buenos Aires, Thanks to Miss Morrissey, A Closer Corporation, Blue Serge, "Hoops, My Dear!", Sisters Under Their Skin, An Etude For Emma.

Edna Ferber born on August 15, 1885 and died on April 16, 1968 was an author, short story writer and dramatist. Her books were particularly renowned and were awarded the Pulitzer Prize-winning So Big, Show Boat and made into the 1927 musical version, Cimarron; adapted into the1931 movie which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and Giant which was made into the 1956 Hollywood film.

She was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to a Hungarian-born Jewish sales person, Jacob Charles Ferber, and his Milwaukee, Wisconsin-born wife, Julia Neumann Ferber, who was of German Jewish lineage. After residing in Chicago, Illinois, and Ottumwa, Iowa, at the age of 12 Ferber and her family lived at Appleton, Wisconsin, where she finished high school and enrolled at Lawrence University. She had newspaper careers at the Appleton Daily Crescent and the Milwaukee Journal before releasing her first story. She contained the 1920 Republican National Convention and 1920 Democratic National Convention for the United Press Association.
