Birmingham, AL: Thunder City Press, 1981. First printing. 56 pp., 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Perfect-bound in printed card covers. Edition of 300 copies. Mark Doty’s first three books were collaborations with his wife Ruth, published in small editions under the name M. R. Doty. By the time this last joint volume was published, the couple had divorced and Doty had moved to Manhattan, beginning a new life. His first book under his own name, Turtle, Swan, appeared in 1987. The title page of this copy bears Doty’s signature and the date, soon after publication (1/18/82), and the half-title is filled by a long, intimate, and poetic inscription: “for Peggy, maestro of puppet operas, snow orchestrator, sunflower collector, stone cataloguer, connoisseur of Fred Astaire, with love and gratitude for your support and brightness.” Light rubbing to wrappers, otherwise fine. An uncommon book, with a terrific inscription.
