About This Item
London: Corgi Books, 1996 Third printing; first published in 1994 by Doubleday, a division of Transworld Publishers. Between 1912 and 1970, about 7000 children were shipped from the United Kingdom to Australia. They were told their parents were dead -- or their mothers unfit -- but that they were destined for better lives, with warm beds, full stomachs and a proper education. The boys who ended up in the four Catholic Church-run homes in and around Bindoon, outside Perth, however, endured beatings, privation and sexual abuse by the Christian Brothers who were their custodians. Their stories were rarely acknowledged until the late 1980s when Humphreys, a Nottingham social worker, began to help reconnect the child migrants with their parents. Humphreys founded the Child Migrants Trust; this best-selling book was later turned into a movie, "Oranges and Sunshine" (2011). Light-to-moderate cover edgewear, including narrow 2" bump/crease and corner diagonal crease to upper rear cover. Otherwise clean, tight, and unworn.
