Rouen: Berthelin, 1647 Two books bound in one (with separate title-pages). 198; 199-303 pages. Contemporary stained limp vellum, ink title on spine. Rosenthal 277; Duveen 196; Ferguson 1, 248. Jean d' Espagnet hides his name under imperfect anagrams but is by traditional repute the author of the two works in this volume. He is said to have been president of the Bordeaux parliament; the town president Schmieder calls him such and adds that he was a defender of alchemy. In the first work d' Espagnet became the first of his time to oppose the physics of Aristotle while in the second he concentrates on the alchemical art with a listing of relevant apparatus. He was commended for the elegance of his style as well as his alchemical knowledge, and the legendary alchemist Philalethes is one of the earliest writers to quote from him, transcribing whole passages.. Fourth Revised and Enlarged. Vellum. Very Good.. 16mo. Hardback.
