About This Item

London: W.H. Allen , 1971. 305pp., line-drawn endpapers (plan of crime scene buildings). Two, unpaginated b/white halftone plate sections. Book clean and square. Bright gilt title over lightly bumped spine. Plain black boards undamaged. Textblock unmarked. Dustjacket chipped and edgeworn, with several closed tears, plus clear tape reinforcing on plain verso. "On 2nd November, 1952, Christopher Craig, aged sixteen, and Derek Bentley, aged nineteen, were trapped by police on the roof of a Croydon (England) warehouse. What had begun as a petty robbery was to end in tragedy. A gun battle ensued - to be compared by the National Press with the Sydney Street Siege - and P.C. Miles was killed. The two teenagers were tried before Lord Goddard at the Old Bailey and convicted of Miles's murder. The armed Craig was too young to hang, but the unarmed Bentley was not, and despite an Appeal, massive petitions and an uproar in the House of Commons, he was duly executed." The facts, many of which David Yallop now makes public for the first time, make it clear there was a terrible miscarriage of justice . . . Contents include: Prelims., An Open Letter to the Home Secretary. 8 chapters. Appendices. Sources. Index. Book weight approx. 520g. . First Edition. Hardcover and Dustjacket. Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
