About This Item

Jonathan Cape. Hardback. 274pp. A study of the fast growing firm of paper and stationery manufacturers and the people and places involved including John Dickinson who invented a continuous mechanised papermaking process and George Longman of the publishing firm who was an early partner in the firm. Frontis plus 49 further plates. Appendices list employees at various sites and time (not exhaustive). Fascinating insight into this long standing British company and some of the important scholars in archaeology and antiquities for whom working here was their day job, of that of their fathers. The author Dame Joan Evans, best known as an historian of medieval art, is the daughter of John Evans who was both a one-time chairman of the company, nephew and son in law of the founder and and archaeologist and half-sister of Arthur Evans (1851–1941), curator of the Ashmolean Museum and excavator of Minoan Crete who was the founder's grandson. Extensive pedigree of the Dickinson and Evans families to front endpaper and map showing world wide branches of the firm. The firm was based in Nash Mills, Apsley, Hertfordshire. Red cloth with gilt titles to spine is very clean and neat. Dust wrapper is slightly rubbed to very edges with a very few tiny chips. Previous owner's name to endpaper. Very good copy in good+ dust wrapper . Hardback. 1955.
