(Paris), Mendoze, (c. 1830). Oblong folio (size: 27 x 56.5 cm). Half green morocco, marbled boards. Spine goldtooled. Lithographed titlepage (= plate I), 2 ff letterpress text + 29 plates numbered II - XXX. (corners a bit rubbed and paper on inner front hinge a bit damaged & loosening, light waterstain in the lower margin of the titlepage and the textpages and plates 23 - 30, a bit more pronounced near the back).
The Aneid, written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BCE, is a Latin epic poem that tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who fled the fall of Troy and travelled to Italy, where he became the ancestor of the Romans. The present work contains 30 lithographs, including the pictorial title, made by C. Motte after the orginal mural paintings by Luigi Ademollo (1764-1849), whose work can be seen at the Plazzo S.
