Description:
[London,: Christopher Browne,, c.1693].. 610 by 855mm. (24 by 33.75 inches).. Engraved map on two mapsheets, fine original hand colour in outline, right and left borders with tables of text, a few small ink stains, some minor nicks to upper margin. This rare map of England is densely packed with details concerning the distance between trading centres. Produced by Christopher Browne in 1693, it is a copy of the first economic map of England made thirteen years earlier, as recorded by a manuscript note to the verso identifying it as 'a reduced version of John Adams' Map of England, 1680'. It seems to have been designed to appear alongside 69 other maps in Browne's 'New Geographical Atlas', but was also sold separately. It retains all the key features of Adams' map. An elaborate cartouche on the lower right margin contains a note explaining that all the cities and market towns of England and Wales are shown here, connected to their neighbours by parallel lines representing the roads and accompanied by… Read More

'A work full of recondite and important information on the origin of the Abyssinians, the climate, soil, productions, etc.' (Lowndes). 'The land of Ethiopia had long fascinated Europeans, not merely as an exotic and foreign land full of strange beasts, as evidenced by the incredibly ferocious looking hippo portrayed below, but also as an ancient and independent Christian empire beyond the realms of Islam which hemmed them in. It had adopted Christianity in the 4th century A.D. but had been cut off from Western Europe by the spread of Islam across… Read More

Description:
London,: Bowles & Carver,, [c1796].. 215 by 180mm. (8.5 by 7 inches).. Set of three engraved caricature maps, with fine original hand-colour. A fine set of Robert Dighton's "Geography Bewitched" series, depicting England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland in a humorous light. England and Wales are depicted as John Bull with full tankard of beer in hand and riding a monstrous fish; Scotland is a merry gent, who sits on a wool sack and carrying a tartan sack over his shoulder; and Ireland as a merry woman - who is said to the wife of John Bull - in traditional dress playing the harp. The series was the work of Robert Dighton (c1752-1814) a well-known painter of portraits and caricatures, as well as decorative subjects, who is regarded as one of the most talented social caricaturists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The series like much of Dighton's caricatures were published by Carington Bowles (fl.1752-1793). Carington Bowles worked initially with his father, John Bowles, before… Read More
