About This Item
A & C Black, London, 1934. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Very Good. In this book the history of the craft of workers in precious metals is briefly surveyed in its successive phases, especially the work of the silversmith in Anglo-Saxon times, in the Middle Ages, and from the Renaissance to the Restoration. The modern period is dealt with in more detail, beginning with the great demand for plate to replace that which was lost in the Civil War. Form and decoration are discussed, and the varieties of silver pieces made for the dinner-service, and the service of wine and beer, of tea, chocolate and coffee. Particular attention is given, in both text and illustrations, to several subjects hitherto neglected, notably the art of heraldic engraving on plate. Well over one hundred carefully selected pieces are illustrated, the majority being subsequent to 1660, of the period most accessible to the collector to-day. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 232 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Dust Jacket is in very good condition, with only the lightest of wear to top edge & some browning to spine. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Top edge brown.
