About This Item

London: B.T. Batsford, 1946. 151 pp, 8 3/4" H. 2 colour plates (including frontispiece), b&w photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(T)he life of the Townsman is no less natural or traditional than that of the countryman. Beginning in medieval times, the story is carried through the Stuart, Georgian and Victorian periods to its conclusion with The Citizen of To-day. The hundred and more illustrations taken from little-known drawings, medieval MSS, prints, paintings and modern photographs make up a commentary on the text which is as apt as it is etnertaining. (Together they) give the same enthusiastic support for the way of life of the English Townsman, from a twentieth-century viewpoint, as did Charles Lamb and Samuel Johnson from the viewpoints of the preceding two centuries." Light wrinkling to the top/bottom of the spine, a moderate bump to the bottom corner of the front board, lean to the spine, a slight separation between the page gatherings at page 136 bur still holding firm in the binding, very light browing to the endpapers and some of the pages, light edge wear to the boards, minor foxing and some light soiling to the top of the text block. Dust jacket has browning on the spine, flap-folds and the top of the flaps; light to moderate edge wear including very small chips and tears; protected in a removable mylar sleeve.. Not Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/Good.
