A satirical novel by Samuel Butler on Victorian society which uses the Swiftian device of setting his satire in a fictional culture which enabled Butler, as the critic Elinor Shaffer has written, 'to analyze the phenomena of religion their point of genesis, while disclaiming all responsibility for their uncanny parallels to certain known religions.'

The novel is one of the first to explore ideas of artificial intelligence, as influenced by Darwin's recently published On the Origin of Species and the machines developed out of the Industrial Revolution. [wiki]
