London: Printed for J. Nourse, 1769. Second edition. Hardcover. Good + overall. The second edition "with very large additions". Treatise by the Swiss Enlightenment physician, Samuel Tissot (1728 - 1797) a prominent medical educator who wrote one of the earliest best selling medical self help books, 'Advice to the Public About Their Health', for non-city dwellers. In this 'Essay on Diseases Inherent to Literary ..." Tissot notes the deleterious effects of lack of exercise and the dangers of too much "deep thinking": "I mean not to discourage people from study; I mean rather to be useful to students, in laying before them the dangers they are exposed to from immoderate application." (p43).

Small 8vo, xxiv,189pp, advertisements [3]. Contemporary brown calf, the front board detached, but present, the spine rubbed & chipped (needs a reback). Internally, nice and clean. Early pages a bit toned at margins. Previous owner bookplate inside front board, Charles W. Pilgrim; previous owner stamp "Cochrane". Dr. Pilgrim was the New York state Commissioner of Mental Health for whom the third New York state farm colony or psychiatric asylum known as Pilgrim State Hospital in Brentwood was named. With a previous owner name at ffep of Charles Lowell (1782 - 1861), who spent two years in Edinburgh, Scotland and became pastor of the West Congregational (Unitarian) Church of Boston.
