About This Item

London: Callow and Wilson., 1829. First edition. Signed and inscribed by the translator. 12mo. Contemporary half plum calf over marbled boards; the spine with four raised bands, compartments richly decorated in gilt, and with morocco title label lettered in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Marbling to page edges. A very good copy indeed, the binding square and firm with a little rubbing to the boards and extremities. The contents with some light scattered foxing to the preliminary pages are otherwise in very good order and clean throughout. A handsome copy. Signed and inscribed by Edward Rigby in black ink to the half title page: "Mr Thomas Salt, a prize at / the weekly Examination of the / Midwifery Class at St Bartholomew's / Hospital, from the Translator / June 1. 1844". The first English translation of one of the key works on obstetrics by the renowned German obstetrician Franz Karl Naegele (1778-1851). A nice association copy, presented by the translator, the leading obstetrician, medical writer, and first President of the Obstetrical Society of London, Edward Rigby (1804-1860), in his capacity as the examiner of the midwifery class at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London.
