About This Item

Menston: The Scolar Press Limited, 1971. Facsimile edition of the original edition of 1726; 8vo, pp. [8], xx, 192; fine in original maroon cloth stamped in gilt on upper cover and spine. Shirley died in 1666 and in 1726 Jenkin Thomas Philipps published this book which he edited from Shirley's grammatical writings. "Philipps was tutor to the children of George II, and, as the title page of the Essay indicates, this particular work was designed as a text-book for William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland ... Copies of the 1726 text are rare, and the issue reproduced here is believed to be unique" (Note).
