London: J.M. Dent, 1911. 8th. Hardcover. Near Fine. Charles E. Brock. Two Volume Set. xxii,291, xi,254 pages. Frontis drawing and numerous text illustrations by Charles Brock to each volume. Introduction by Augustine Birrell. Illustrated endpapers. Half leather over brown linen boards. Five raised bands with gilt deocrations and border rules. Title in gilt. Some light edgewear but overall bright and clean. Ink note on front free endpaper dated 1913, otherwise interior bright and clean. Very nice set. These essays made their first appearance in The London Magazine between 1820-1825, and are among the most popular of Lamb's writings. There are 52 essays in the set, including: The South-Sea House; Mrs. Battle's Opinions of Whist; A Chapter on Ears; A Quaker's Meeting; The Praise of Chimney-Sweepers; A Dissertation Upon Roast Pig; The Wedding; Old China; Confessions of A Drunkard; Popular Fallacies; etc, etc.
