New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1946. Hardcover. Very Good. This edition of fifteen hundred copies of *Montaigne's Essays* is designed and decorated by T.M. Cleland for the members of The Limited Editions Club, and is printed by The Aldus Printers. This is copy number 230 and is Signed by T.M. Cleland in the rear of the *Handbook*." Translated by George B. Ives. With an introduction by Andre Gide and an accompanying *Handbook to the Essays* which includes the notes upon the text by the translator and a series of comments on the Essays by Grace Norton. Complete in four volumes. Three quarter white vellum stamped in gilt with papercovered boards, red top stain. Vellum is age-toned and rubbed with significant cracking on volume three's spine and repaired tear on spine title of the "Handbook", very good housed in a good only tape-repaired edgeworn slipcase.
