Complete in four volumes. 8vo. xv, 243pp. iv, 186pp. [4], 188-355, (255-288pp. mispaginated but complete). xiv, 334pp. Bound in modern full calf deluxe binding with finely gold-tooled spine, red and olive title-labels with gold lettering. Top-edge gilt. Raised bands. Dentelles. Modern endpapers. Frontispiece engravings in each volume. Authoritative work by Swiss physiognomist and poet, John Caspar Lavater. The work was first published in Germany in 1775-1778 under the title "Physiognomische Fragmente zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntnis und Menschenliebe." The popular work was translated into French and English. This set was translated from the last Paris edition. The two main sources from which Lavater developed his physiognomical studies were the works of the Italian polymath Giambattista della Porta, and the observations made by Sir Thomas Browne in "Religio Medici." Profusely illustrated with 308 full-page engravings and drawings (one engraving in fold-out). With one folding text plate. Very minor shelf wear on bindings. Sporadic foxing throughout. Ex-libris of Milba K. Arthur on inside of front board. Overall very good condition. Tight complete set in an exquisite binding.

From the library of Axel Carlander, with his signature 1891 and bookplate, and of Erik och Maja Wetter, with their bookplate. Holcroft’s Englishe translation was first published in 1789. The German first edition ”Physiognomische Fragmente zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntnis und Menschenliebe” was published between 1775 and 1778. Lavater introduced the idea that physiognomy was related to a persons character.

Moore; Vol. 1: 243, Vol. 2 & 3: 186, 187-288 and Vol. 4: xi-[15]16-334pp. ; rebound late 19th century 3/4 calf leather with marbled covered boards, raised bands with gilt decorations. The leather at the tips and spine ends on all volumes is scuffed, some of the tips are worn to the board at the very end. Small chip in the top spine edge of volume 3 and the front cover is rubbed at the bottom. All are tight and clean with occasional foxing. Pastedown is linen, A very nice tight clean and attractive book. Previous owners initials printed small on front end page. .
