Contemporary polished calf, spine in compartments gilt and red morocco label, sprinkled and polished edges (spine slightly sunned, occasional spotting inside). From the library of Charles Benson (bookplate). A near fine copy of Federico Commandino's translation of Euclid's Elements books 1-6, 11, and 12, edited by John Keill. Keill is also the author of a small textbook on stereometry and logarithms, which is appended to Euclid with a separate title (dated 1731). The text of Euclid was printed in Oxford by Henry Clemens, and Keill's book by Richard Clemens. Catalogs of both printers are at the end of each part. John Keill (1671-1721) was a Scottish mathematician, natural philosopher, and cryptographer.
