About This Item

London: Faber and Faber Limited, 1952. Hardcover. G (Is missing dj; binding is faded in color; book is otherwise nice.). Green cloth, with red title block & gilt letters on spine; gilt decoration on front cover; gilt top edges; off-white & color illus. dust jacket, 788 pp. 24 color and 586 bw plates. Originally sold and released separately from the "Illustraetd Historical Survey" by this same author. "Primarily a book of reference giving an account of the history and productions of every factory of importance in Europe working in the period covered. The articles range in length from a couple of lines on an obscure painter to full treatises on the larger factories. Dated and documentary pieces are cited; bibliographical references are given; marks are faithfully reproduced and tabulated in an unusual index. Technical terms are explained and general matters (such as the use of lustre decoration and the various ceramic colours, forgeries and figure-modelling, the value of marks, and the historic styles of ceramic decoration) are discussed in many interesting and informative articles." (dj) And much more.
