About This Item

London: Hamish Hamilton Ltd., 1946. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A smart first edition of this exploration of post-war Germany from Spender. First edition. In the summer and autumn of 1945, Spender is sent to Germany to find out what survived of German intellectual life following the defeat of the Nazi Party. With an application of critical judgement, he describes episodes of his time there, and accounts of the civilians, soldiers, and politicians that he meets. Written by Sir Stephen Harold Spender, an English poet, novelist, and essayist known for his work on social injustice and the class struggle. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear and minor fading to the extremities. Original unclipped dust wrapper is also smart with light shelf wear and the odd mark. Sunning to the spine and the odd small closed tear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with light scattered spotting to the first and last few pages. Very Good Indeed
