About This Item

New York: Howard Fertig, 1979. 1st/1st. VG/G. Stated First Edition with no other printings listed. The book is tight and square with solid hinges. Bottom corners bumped and wear to spine tail, else boards are clean and unmarred. Textblock is clean with no writing, bookplate or markings and not BCE, ex-library or remaindered. Dust jacket is unclipped ($35.00) with chips to corners and spine ends and light soiling. Protected in a Brodart Mylar cover. Includes publisher's Review Copy card. Introduction by Leon Edel, the biographer whose writing on Henry James won a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award.

Henry James destroyed the manuscripts of most of his novels. Of the three that survive, The Europeans has been the most inaccessible because sections of it are held by four separate owners and institutions. This fact was unknown until discovered by Henry James' biographer, Leon Edel. Reassembled for the first time in this facsimile edition, here is the complete manuscript of The Europeans as James wrote it. With an introduction by Leon Edel.

Synopsis

The Europeans concerns an expatriate American, Eugenia, and her artist brother, Felix Young. Eugenia is the morganatic wife of a German prince, but she is to be repudiated in favor of a state marriage; thus she leaves for Boston to make an appropriate match of her own.

Reviews

On Aug 26 2014, a reader said:
I enjoyed this book immensely. It blended the old and new world creatively. It's philosophical underpinnings were interesting. It was not a bestseller at the time, moreover, it probably is now. I like books that use the English Language in it's old form.
