Hodder & Stoughton, Limited. London. 1957. 8vo. Bright, clean copy finely bound in mid twentieth century full red morocco leather binding by Morrell. Spine with raised bands, each with gilt piping. Spine compartments ruled and lettered in gilt. Ronald Knox's Monsignor coat of arms with the motto "Lux in Tenebris Lucet" (Light shines in the darkness) stamped in gilt to the centre of the front board. Single gilt ruled border on all the boards. All edges gilt. Double ruled border on the turn-ins. Marbled endpapers. A little darkening to the spine but overall a fine and beautiful presentation of this translation. --- A controversial figure, Knox converted from Anglicanism to Catholicism in 1917. Tan leather heavily embossed with fruit, leaves and grain with the title on the front board and the spine. A personal Bible of outstanding artistry Beautifully bound and tooled editionThe Bible is a collection of religious texts, writings, or scriptures sacred in Christianity, Judaism, Samaritanism, Islam, Rastafari, and many other faiths. It appears in the form of an anthology, a compilation of texts of a variety of forms that are all linked by the belief that they are collectively revelations of God. These texts include theologically-focused historical accounts, hymns, prayers, proverbs, parables, didactic letters, admonitions, essays, poetry, and prophecies. Believers also generally consider the Bible to be a product of divine inspiration. Those books that are included in the Bible by a tradition or group are called canonical, indicating that the tradition/group views the collection as the true representation of God's word and will. A number of biblical canons have evolved, with overlapping and… Read More

Authored by William Sellon (1730-1790), revered curate of St. James, Clerkenwell from 1767 until his death, who was much esteemed for his personal integrity and power as a lecturer. His grandson, Baker Peter Smith, in an 1852 memoir of Sellon reports that he (Sellon) was facetiously referred to by his colleagues as "silver-tongued Sellon" for his ability to bring his hearers to such heights of enthusiasm with his oratory that donations poured in.…
