London: Christie, Manson & Woods, 1977 4 volumes 4to (25.5 cm), folding front., 124 pp, 42 plates on 15 ff (438 lots); front., 155 pp, 18 ff of plates (lots 439-936); front., 179 pp, 15 ff of plates (lots 937-1439); front., 120 pp, 15 plates (lots 1140-1737). Publisher's printed boards (ownership entries on the front free endpapers, bindings slightly stained, spines repaired). The auction catalogues document sales conducted by Christie, Manson & Woods in London from June 22, 1977, to July 13, 1978, with the exception of the fifth part, the "Evelyn Family Library." John Evelyn (1620-1706), an English writer, gardener, and diarist, stood as one of the founding members of the Royal Society. His library mirrored his affiliation with the Society through the acquisition of numerous major scientific works. Many of his books were obtained during his travels abroad, including from the sale of Cardinal Mazarin's library in 1650. Evelyn's collection also encompassed the library of his father-in-law, Sir Richard Browne. Notably, a significant portion of these books were bound in Paris and adorned with tools specifically designed for Evelyn by Abraham Bosse. The catalogue showcases examples of the most noteworthy bindings, accompanied by color plates for illustration.
