Appleton and Company, 1860, First American edition. . original blind-stamped and pictorial cloth, gilt microscope on cover, gilt spine title lettering, cover rubbed, edgewear, light stain on some margins, no bookplates, names or marks, good. . 20 x 13.5 cm]; xii, 480 pp, illustrations, index. . Gosse was among the most distinguished naturalists in the nineteenth century and published numerous books, especially on marine biology, the sea shore, aquariums, and on his travels in Jamaica, Canada, Alabama, etc. Freeman 86: 'This was one of the most successful of Gosse's books and was a useful and accurate manual for the amateur microscopist. Most of the book is based on original observations and some of it was taken from his previously published papers in serials'. A picture of this book is available on request by email.
