London: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, 1859 A fair to good copy of the 1st edition in the original decorative cloth binding with numerous illustrations in the text. Not dated on the title page but with signature to front endpaper dated 1859 and meeting the criteria for the 1st edition. The binding is generally clean with a couple of small marks to the front board. The spine is darkened and there is wear at the front joint with splitting to the cloth at the bottom. Spine ends pulled and spine slightly cocked to front. Small dent at the top of the back board. Bumped corners. Internally there is a blind stamp (bookseller's) to the front endpaper and two signatures, one dated 1859. The front endpaper is splitting at the joint. Contents complete: title, preface dated February 1859, list of illustrations pp xii; text including index pp 1-506. Adverts for Gosse's works 4pp. The contents are in very good clean condition with light toning to margins. Top page corners have been turned over at some point on pp 28-32, and 255-7. The book has a light musty odour.
