Volume 1 of Burney's 5 volume history of the exploration of the Pacific Ocean. 1803. Volume is ex-library copy with library stamps of University of California dated 1870 and found on title page, p.57 and p.131. Soundly bound in modern blue buckram. Collation: Title page, xii, [8], 391 with 5 maps and modern end blanks. Overall condition is good with some condition issues. All repairs described are professionally done. Title page rehinged. Frontis map and map opposite p. 277 are original. Frontis map is rehinged. 3 maps bound at end are professional full size reproductions (image of California map is provided). Appendix (pgs. 385-391) is also professional reproduction. Page 20 has closed tear repaired with rice paper. Water stain at head of spine waxes and wanes on pages 121-146, and 193-249; occasionally encroaching on text. Ink stain margin of p.220-21. 1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. 1858 London hardcover. First edition. Volume has undergone repairs: recased using original red boards with sympathetic new leather spine; new endpapers. Interior has moderate foxing, smudges and wear but nothing vandalized. Paginates: [6], (1)-239, errata slip plus 6 unpaginated plates. Complete as issued except for blanks. Numerous engravings in text. Uncommon true first. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: although classified as fiction what the author is doing is relating facts about recent world travels in a style designed to appeal to youth. Includes instruction on use of scientific instruments by travellers - an idea adopted not long after by The Royal Geographical Society in "Hints to Travellers" - so maybe this book is not 'juvenalia' as one might be led to believe.
