Full leather-bound in calf, tri-coloured spine labels (red, tan and black) with gilt lettering -- 'House Documents Vol. 55' on red label; 'Nos. 21-136 Except Nos. 29, 35, 39, 41, 42, 50, 52-61, 64, 88, MISCELLANEOUS' on tan label; and the black label is almost entirely missing. Section paginated. Illustrated with numerous tables, and two fold-out maps, one of which is the inner harbor of Galveston showing proposed improvement, and the other a fold-out grid map accompanying a 36pp article on The Indians of Devils Lake Reservation (North Dakota). Library bookplate and stamp to front endpapers. The volume begins with a 290pp section titled 'Annual Report of A. McDowell, Clerk of the House of Representatives, submitting report for the year ending June 30, 1901, as to employees, the period of their employment, and the sums paid to them, the expenditures of the Contingent Fund, and the Stationery Accounts (Document No. 21)'. This is followed by 'Reports To Be Made To Congress'; 'Books, Maps, and Pamphlets in the Folding Room'; 'Judgments Rendered by the Court of Claims'; 'Methods of Naval Construction'; 'Contingent Expenses, Treasury Department'; 'Expenditures of the Smithsonian Institution'; 'Expenditures, Department of Labor'; 'Annuities of the Sac and Fox of the Mississippi'; 'Judgments Rendered on Account of Indian Depredations'; 'Disbursements by the Treasurer of Porto Rico'; 'Conveyance of Inherited Lands by Certain Indians'; 'Contingent Expenses of the War Department'; 'Eleventh Report of the Board of Ordnance and Fortification'; 'Examination and Survey of Inner Harbor of Galveston, Tex.'; 'Appropriation for Gun and Mortar Batteries, Etc.'; 'Appropriation for Military Post at Manila, P.I.'; 'Agreement with the Indians of Devils Lake Reservation'; 'Purchase of Round Island, Hudson River'; 'and 'Appropriation for Barracks, Quarters, Etc., in Philippine Islands.
