Initially, Young supported French revolutionaries call for a limited monarchy. His sentiments turned, however, once the revolutionaries decided to end the constitutional monarchy and form a new Republic. Young states in The Example of France, "it is difficult relative to the new system of constitution or government in France...whether they have any other system than that of anarchy."

Young was known for his agricultural writings and later on, his sharp economic-political writings. He had spent some time in France just prior to the Revolution.
