About This Item
London: Richard Bentley, 1836. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 5". None. A fascinating nineteenth century travelogue of Switzerland by the renowned American writer James Fenimore Cooper; complete in two volumes here in the original cloth. Whilst primarily remembered for his prolific and popular historical romances, including 'The Last of the Mohicans', James Fenimore Cooper also produced numerous notable works recounting his travels and experiences in such European countries as France, England, Italy, and Switzerland. This work was first published in Philadelphia by Carey, Lea and Blanchard in 1836 under the title 'Sketches of Switzerland'. The second English language edition was retitled 'Excursions in Switzerland' and was published in the same year by Richard Bentley with the phrase "Successor to Henry Colburn" under the publisher's name. This edition was re-issued yet again in 1836 with a reset half-title page, omitting the reference to Colburn and containing the words "NEW EDITION". This work is this later re-issued edition, with the issue point "New Edition" and lacking the reference to Colburn, as called for. A 'New Edition' copy, complete in two volumes. In a full cloth binding, with original boards and spine preserved. Externally generally smart, with slight bumping to extremities and rubbing and marking to original cloth of boards and spine. Hinges reinforced to both volumes. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned but very bright and clean, with only the odd spot to the first and last few pages. Pages occasionally uncut to volume II. Very Good
