Offsetting/tanning to both sets of end-papers otherwise a VG+ copy in an age-darkened attractive like D/W. A collection of 99 retellings of the same story about a minor brwal on a Paris bus. Each told in a different style to absurd effect. Translated from the original French by Barbara Wright and with a preface by her. A real literary oddity and seemingly a scarce book in first edition format. The first translation of Raymond Queneau's 'untranslatable' Exercices de Style.
Synopsis
Exercises in Style, written by Raymond Queneau, is a collection of 99 retellings of the same story, each in a different style. In each, the narrator gets on the "S" bus (now no. 84), witnesses an altercation between a man with a long neck and funny hat and another passenger, and then sees the same person two hours later at the Gare St-Lazare getting advice on adding a button to his overcoat.
