1884. First Edition. Hard Cover. (Richard and John Edward Taylor 1844). First UK Edition in publisher's original green cloth titled in gilt on the spine. viii & 302 pages, including the half-title, illustrated with 5 textual illustrations and 5 plates, including 2 folding plates. First edition of volume 2 of the collected edition of Faraday's "Experimental Researches in Electricity", complete in itself. There is some edge-wear to the backing cloth at the corner tips causing the boards to "peek out" mostly at the top right front panel. The spine tips are pushed with some edge-wear to the backing cloth. There is a 2cm split along the front gutter spine but this does not affect the binding. It is surface rubbing that has thinned the cloth over the years exposing the reinforcement strip behind the spine. The original mustard yellow endpapers are still present with all five plates (two gatefold) still attached at the rear. Strong hinges. Foxing is almost non-existent apart from being present on the plates due to a different paper composition used. Boards are firm, binding is sound with some general scuff marks or discolouration here and there. About VG. Originally published in 3 volumes over three decades (1839, 1844 and 1855). "Faraday was one of the greatest physicists of the nineteenth century and one of the finest experimenters of all time. He was the first to produce an electric current from a magnetic field, invented the first electric motor and dynamo, demonstrated the relation between electricity and chemical bonding, discovered the effect of magnetism on light, and discovered and named diamagnetism, the peculiar behaviour of certain substances in strong magnetic fields. He provided the experimental, and a good deal of the theoretical, foundation upon which James Clerk Maxwell erected classical electromagnetic field theory" (Printing and the Mind of Man 308). Photographs/scans available upon request.
