Subtitle continued: And of the Chace of the Gorilla, Crocodile, Leopard, Elephant, Hippopotamus, and Other Animals. Half black leather titled in gilt on spine with marbled sides and matching endpapers. Marbled edges. Folding frontispiece engraving of a gorilla. Folding map of West Equatorial Africa bound in at rear. xviii, 479pp. Many engraved plates and smaller illustrations. The American author relates his travels through the western part of Africa comprising parts of the modern countries of Mali, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, Gabon, and Sierra Leone in 1856-59. He was involved in various commercial ventures involving the killing of 2000 birds and 1000 quadrupeds and stuffing and sending their skeletons back to the United States. Lots of descriptions of flora, fauna, and peoples he encountered. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
