About This Item

Kuala Lumpur: Oxford University Press, 1995. Outlines the lives and discoveries of six intrepid explorers in Southeast Asia in the mid to late 19th century. Henri Mouhot was part of the French colonial mission in peninsular Southeast Asia and explored and wrote of Siam, Cambodia and Laos. A fellow Frenchman, Francis Garnier, led an incredibly productive exploration of the Mekong River and the lands through which it passes. Scottish colonial administrator J. G. Scott explored and wrote extensively of Burma; fellow Scot Robert Burns, before his premature death at the hands of pirates, wrote briefly of the previously unknown tribal inhabitants of northwest Borneo. Norwegian explorer Carl Bock recorded much ethnological detail on the peoples of Sumatra, Borneo and Siam, and Dutch medic and explorer A. W. Nieuwenhuis, the first Western traveller to traverse the entire island of Borneo, wrote extensively of the geography and ethnology of that territory. xx, 280 pp., 17 b&w photos, 8 maps.. First Edition. Softbound. Good. 20 x 13 cm..
