About This Item
London: Printed by W. Bowyer, for S. Keble, 1715. The Tenth Edition, Revised and Corrected. Full Leather. Very Good. Folio. Pp. 4 p.l., 398, [10] index. Title ruled in red, copper-engraved frontis portrait by D. Leggan, woodcut printer's device, woodcut headpiece and initials. Contemporary calf, panelled in blind in the Cambridge style, plain spine with five raised bands, gilt label. Minor rubbing to extremities, corners a little bumped, headcap worn, front and rear joints cracking (but covers holding firmly), otherwise a very nice copy, in an attractive and still-serviceable binding. The Tenth Edition of Pearson's famous Exposition of the Creed, first published in 1659, incorporates the author's final revisions (1683) and includes an index (9th edition, 1710). A powerful champion of the Church of England against Romanism and Nonconformity, John Pearson, Bishop of Chester, was "perhaps the most erudite and profound divine of a learned and theological age. His classical Exposition of the Creed... reveals his firm grasp of fundamental principles, his delight in clear and accurate statement, and his judicious and sober temper, while the notes which illustrate the text reflect his remarkable knowledge, especially of the Christian Fathers." (Cross, p. 1055).
