About This Item
Oxford, 1940. unbound. 1 page, 10 x 8 inches, Oxford, England, November 14, 1940. Written to powerful New York attorney and political power broker Frederic R. Coudert, concerning the Neutrality Laws and President Roosevelt's quest for an unprecedented third term, in part: "...I think your arguments against the Neutrality Law are overwhelming; in fact the law itself is one of the amiable weaknesses which all healthy democracies like yours and ours are subject. I was very much interested in your argument against the third term. Of course that is a problem which we never have to think about and it seems to me that your case is very strong. Eight years of such high and concentrated authority and responsibility as your President enjoys is probably as much as is good for any human being or for one country under him..." Much more great content. It is surprising that Coudert would be so adamant against F.D.R. serving a third term considering the fact he had been appointed to several Panels and Commissions under the Presidents auspice. Coudert openly campaigned for the New Deal and was an early supporter of Roosevelt's Lend Lease policy when originally proposed in 1940. Several folds; faint smudge on the signature. Very good(-) condition.

Australian-born British classical scholar and public intellectual. He was an outstanding scholar of the language and culture of Ancient Greece but wrote many articles in support of British Foreign Policy.
