About This Item

New York: Random House, 1954. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. Octavo. 5.75 x 8.5 in. 437 pp. Very good in the original navy blue cloth boards that have only minor wear towards the bottom of the spine, with a good grey slipcase that has tanning, some soiling, and shelfwear along the edges, top, and spine. The top stain is bright, while the vertical and bottom edges show signs of mild foxing and toning. The prior owner, author David Madden, affixed black-and-white portraits of Faulkner to both the inside front and back boards. Madden also pasted a bookplate to the front free endpaper. Otherwise, the interior pages are clean and free of foxing and the spine and hinges remain firm. Signed in blue ink on the flyleaf and hand-numberd 748 of the intial 1000 copies of the first edition that were signed and numbered by Faulkner.

Synopsis

A Fable is a novel written in 1954 by the American author William Faulkner, which won him both the Pulitzer prize and the National Book Award in 1955. Despite these recognitions, however, the novel received mixed critical reviews and a reputation as one of Faulkner's lesser works . The author, on the other hand, spent over a decade and tremendous effort on A Fable, and considered it his masterpiece when it was completed. Historically, it can be seen as a precursor to Catch 22.
