About This Item
Boston, Mass: Roberts Brothers, 1884. First American Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Quarto. Edition de Luxe limited to two hundred copies of which this is number 88. Signed by the publisher. With 25 original etchings by A. Delierre. The volume is quarter bound in white vellum and green cloth with gilded illustrations on both the cover and spine. On the cover there is an image of a hillly landscape with two ducks carrying a turtle, and on the spine a rooster, a dog and a crane. The vellum has turned grey, and there a nice patina of age while the gilding is still very bright. Gift inscription with a quote from 1884 in pencil in a flowing and confident hand. The binding is sound and square, and the interior is crisp and clean, and the pages are still bright. The etchings have also been well preserved, retaining deep inky blacks. Shipped from the Calico Cat Bookshop, a brick and mortar independent bookshop established in 1975.
