Mekong Press, 2013. Paperback. New Book. Paperback. Burmese journalist and political activist Aung Zaw tells the story of the struggle for democracy in Burma. He participated in the first student protests in 1988. At that time he endured arrests and beatings and witnessed the Burmese army shoot and kill protesters. He later lived in exile to avoid capture. But the central figure of this narrative is Aung San Suu Kyi. This woman returned from a comfortable life in Europe to take leadership of the democracy movement. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 but was unable to collect it because she was under house arrest for 15 years. She finally delivered her Nobel acceptance speech in 2012. Zaw discusses Burmese politics and many of Kyi's Burmese peace activist colleagues, such as journalist Win Tin, who was jailed for 14 years; former defense minister and head of the armed forces Tin Oo; and former student leader Min Ko Naing, put behind bars for 15 years. Rebellious Buddhist monks comprise part of the story, as well as armed citizen armies and international figures such as Desmond Tutu and Hillary Clinton. The world is watching Burma closely, and the struggle is not over. Distributed by the U. of Washington press (2013 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR)
