Kyoto, Japan: Kyoto Cultural Research Association, 1964. This is a bilingual text, with primary text in Japanese and ancillary text in English. This is the second volume only of a two-volume set. This so-called third edition [but more accurately third and greatly revised publication?] bears a preface dated 1958. First published 1953 [?]. Presumed 1964 reprint of that edition. Apparently the first edition of Faces of Ukiyoe existed as early as 1929, early in the Showa Era. Printed and bound in Japan. Paper-covered hardboards, the paper presumed hand-made. The front board with a pasted in full-color print reproduction, by the artist-editor [?]. Possibly annotated by him in Japanese on the title page. Generally unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. Very clean binding. 8.5 x 6 inches. Text block firmly bound in. Pastedowns lined with hand-made [?] Japanese paper. With unnumbered pages of text and illustration, including 65 full-page B&W collotype plates featuring the work of Toriyama, Kitagawa, Banki, Eizan, Toyonobu, Toyokuni III, and numerous others. All plates from the Yosikawa Collection of the editor. With the handsome ex libris sticker of previous owner to the rear pastedown. Overall a very clean copy inside and out. In the original plain cardboard slipcase. The slipcase is much chipped but has done a very good job of protecting the book. A Very Good copy. Scarce in any condition. Kampo Yoshikawa was an ukiyo-e artist [1894-1979]. According to Yoshikawa, "this third edition is devoted primarily to hand-painted pictures… Differing from ordinary paintings, ukiyoe are represented by both hand-paintings and [wood block] prints." In addition to his prints, the Kyoto Cultural Museum apparently has a collection of Japanese dolls amassed by Yoshikawa during his lifetime.. Reprint. Decorative Boards. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
