About This Item

[Di tu chu ban she].. 1st Edition, 1st Printing.. 1968.. Two Chinese Cultural Revolution maps printed on both sides of a single sheet, folded, scale 1: 4,500,000, inset maps (Corsica and France), legend showing railway lines, national and provincial territorial boundaries (Map of France). Mao's quotations accompanied by a head portrait upper section both sides. Some light scattered foxing a little heavier at folds, folds lightly worn with two small tape repairs at margins, otherwise good. The May Uprising in France 1968 was a students/workers movement which led to massive strikes across the nation and paralysed the government. The Communist Party of China were quick to draw a parallel between the French protests and the Chinese Cultural Revolution, using the protests to promote the idea that capitalism, imperialism and colonialism would soon be defeated across the world.

The quotation by Mao printed above the detailed Map of France reads "It can be said with certainty that the complete collapse of colonialism, imperialism, and all systems of exploitation, and the complete emancipation of all the oppressed peoples and nations of the world are not far off". This quotation was selected from the “Statement by Comrade Mao Tse-tung, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, in Support of the Afro-American Struggle Against Violent Repression” (April 16, 1968).

Printed on the reverse above "A Sketch Mao of Events on May 1968" there is another quote from Chairman Mao which reads This quotation translates as "The proletariat and working people of Europe, North America and Oceania are experiencing a new awakening. The U.S. Imperialists and all other such vermin, have already dug their own graves; the day of their burial is not far off." This quotation was selected from the "Comrade Mao Tse-tung’s Message of Greetings To the Fifth Congress of the Albanian Party of Labour" (October 25, 1966).

The pictorial legend includes 4 items: Striking workers and students not attending school and three categories of transportation - railway lines, harbours and airports all of which were stopped.

Block of text upper right section gives the background information of the May Uprising for the Chinese audience. It claims more than 10 million workers participated in the campaign and more than half of the Industrial and Mining Enterprises were in the hands of strikers.
The May Uprising in France in 1968 was a significant movement led by students and workers, resulting in widespread strikes that paralyzed the government. The Communist Party of China swiftly drew a parallel between the French protests and the Chinese Cultural Revolution, using them to promote the notion that capitalism, imperialism, and colonialism would soon be overthrown worldwide.

Above the detailed Map of France, a quotation by Mao is printed, which reads: 可以肯定,殖民主义、帝国主义和一切剥削制度的彻底奔溃,世界上一切被压迫人民、被压迫民族的彻底翻身,已经为期不远了. It translates as: "It can be said with certainty that the complete collapse of colonialism, imperialism, and all systems of exploitation, and the complete emancipation of all the oppressed peoples and nations of the world are not far off." This quotation is taken from the "Statement by Comrade Mao Tse-tung, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, in Support of the Afro-American Struggle Against Violent Repression" (April 16, 1968).

On the reverse side, above "A Sketch of Events in May 1968," there is another quote from Chairman Mao that reads: 欧洲、北美和大洋洲的无产阶级和劳动人民,正处在新的觉醒之中。美帝国主义和其他一切害人虫已经准备好了自己的掘墓人,他们被埋葬的日子不会太长久了. It translates as: "The proletariat and working people of Europe, North America, and Oceania are experiencing a new awakening. The U.S. Imperialists and all other such vermin have already created their own grave-diggers; the day of their burial is not far off." This quotation is taken from the "Comrade Mao Tse-tung's Message of Greetings To the Fifth Congress of the Albanian Party of Labour" (October 25, 1966).

The pictorial legend includes four elements: striking workers and students not attending school, as well as three categories of transportation—railway lines, harbors, and airports—all of which came to a halt during the uprising.

In the upper right section, there is a block of text providing background information on the May Uprising for the Chinese audience. It states that more than 10 million workers participated in the campaign, and over half of the Industrial and Mining Enterprises were under the control of the strikers. .
