Printed by Scott, for J. Robson, Bookseller, New B. Acceptable. 1775 first edition, 'Printed by Scott, for J. Robson, Bookseller, New Bond Street' (London), 8 1/2 x 11 inches tall pale blue buckram cloth hardcover, no dust jacket (as issued), gilt lettering to spine, [2], 49, [1] pp. Moderate to heavy soiling and rubbing to covers. Engraved Liverpool Library bookplate to front pastedown. Endpapers refreshed, with title and 'Advertisement' (preface) pages supplied by facsimiles nicely printed on period paper. Following the full text of the poem is the half title (only) for Jerningham's poem The Venetian Marriage, followed by a refreshed endpaper. Mild edge-chipping, soiling and slight foxing to a handful of pages, mostly at beginning of poem. Mark at the top of two pages where a paper clip was once used as a bookmark. Apart from creasing and slight marginal soiling to a couple of pages, otherwise a very good copy of this uncommon issue. ~SP41~ [2.0P] Edward Jerningham (1737-1812) was a poet who moved in high society during the second half of the eighteenth century. He was educated at the English College at Douay and at Paris before returning to England for the coronation of George III. He converted to Anglicanism, and in addition to poems and plays, wrote on theological subjects. Among his acquaintances were the Earl of Chesterfield, Anna Seward, and Horace Walpole. In this poem, Jerningham describes the defeat by the Spanish of Cuauhtemoc, whom he refers to as 'Guatimozino,' (circa 1495-1525), the Aztec ruler (tlatoani) of Tenochtitlan from 1520 to 1521, making him the last Aztec Emperor of Mexico.
