London: Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co., [1882]. 8vo. xvi, 160 pp. Colour chromolithograph frontisp., 39 colour chromolithograph plates, historiated woodcut-engraved initials & tailpieces throughout. Decorated blue-gray cloth over beveled boards, gilt & black lettering on front cover, decorated spine, inset three-dimensional panel of mounted flowers in green, white & red w/ green paper, & coloured linen on gilt back drop front cover, a.e.g. (some wear & soiling to spine, darkening to spine, minor bumping & wear to corners), still a G unsophisticated copy, w/ former ownership markings on ffep. First edition of this second title in the beautifully illustrated Victorian series on garden flowers. The series was the result of a collaboration by Hibberd (1825-1890), noted British naturalist whose works on aquariums, terrariums, and gardens delighted generations, and Hulme (1841-1909), Victorian botanist and naturalist well known for his Familiar Wild Flowers. Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. changed to Cassell & Co. in 1883 after George William Petter resigned from the firm.
