Edinburgh: Published by William Oliphant, 1824. [3], 6-370pp. Without half-title. With an engraved frontispiece. Contemporary gilt-tooled straight-grain green morocco, A.E.G. Extremities rubbed. Marbled endpapers, ink gift inscription to verso of frontispiece, occasional light spotting. Scottish writer Grace Kennedy's (1782-1825) most renowned novel; a controversial tale of a suffering Jesuit minister written from a Protestant viewpoint. First printed in 1823, the work reached a twelfth edition by 1858, and was translated into several European languages. . Second edition. 12mo in 6s.
