Pogany's illustrations to Faust are emblematic with the color schemes designed to reflect the particular emotional atmosphere of the scene they represent. The preface calls the illustrations "colour poems." Willy Pogany gained success as a book illustrator while living in London in the early part of the 20th century. When he came to America, he also designed sets and costumes for the New York theater. For several years after his move to Hollywood around 1930, he worked as an art director for Warner's First National Studios. Reference: Johnson.
