London.: W. Miller.. Plate dated 1803. Watermarks indicate ca. 1823.. Stipple engraving, handcolored, sheet size 14 x 10 inches. Light indentation at upper edge of sheet from vintage paperclip and two small (1/2 inch) squares of adhesive residue at upper corners on verso - neither affecting the image area in any way. Faint toning to right upper edge and upper left edge (outside image area), a few pinprick size dots, scarcely noticeable. Overall very nice condition. An attractive print together with a separate sheet of descriptive text in both English and French. An exquisitely engraved and handcolored image, plate number 24 from "The Costume of the Russian Empire" first published in 1803, although this sheet is likely from the edition of circa 1823 that was published in Paris. The descriptive text gives information on the region and costume traditions: "The present Plate exhibits a female, whose dress is very similar to that of the men, with the exception of the curious ornaments hanging from her ears, and her felt bonnet..." etc. etc. .
