About This Item
Paris: NRF (Nouvelle Revue Française), 1925. First edition. Hardcover. g. 1/370. Quarto. 238, [4]pp. Contemporary 3/4 morocco over decorative paper covered boards. Original wrappers bound in. Tissue-guarded frontispiece. Book housed in a decorative paper covered slipcase. Fermé la nuit (Closed All Night), considered to be a male counterpart to Ouvert la nuit, portrays the chaotic lives of four colorful men: a German, an Irishman, a Frenchman, and an Asian refugee in London. Morand's stories are marked by eccentric characters, fast-paced narration, disorderly descriptions, and unexpected, humorous imagery. This work is delightfully illustrated throughout with 5 etchings and 36 drawings by Jules Pascin (Julius Mordecai Pincas). One of 370 copies printed on Vélin pur fil paper, of which this is No.158. Moderate rubbing along edges of slipcase. Age wear on binding with front board detached (but present) and leather missing on spine. Very minor age-toning along paper margin. Text in French. Slipcase in overall good, binding in poor to fair, interior in very good condition.
