Boston: Bradlee Whidden, Publisher, 1893. Cloth. Good. Folio. Blue cloth, presumably rebound, with gilt dedication to the library from where these were deaccessioned. Folios. 352, 285 pp. Color plates throughout. All plates present as called for in the two volumes. Color plates done by James H. Emerton and C. E. Faxon. A natural history and survey of the various species of ferns found throughout North America. By Daniel Cady Eaton, an American botanist, as well as curator and professor of botany at Yale. GOOD condition. EX-LIBRARY. Faint markings on the spines, with scattered library stamping in the interiors. Gilt dedication on the front cover of each volume. General fading, soiling and scuffing to the covers, with several small areas of spotting and staining, including a few white paint spots. Cloth split and torn along the center rear hinge of volume one. Minor toning in the interiors.

Description:
Salem / Boston: S. E. Cassino, 1879 / 1880. First edition of this major botanical work. Two volumes, complete. Illustrated with a total of 81 full-color plates by J. H. Emerton and C. E. Faxon. Eaton performed his graduate studies under Asa Gray at Harvard but otherwise spent his entire career at Yale, both as a student and professor and his botanical collections are housed at Yale's Peabody Museum. Bound by "Scheffer, Binder, Harrisburg" in quarto three-quarter and green pebbled-cloth boards; spines each with five raised bands and lettered and ruled in gilt. Volume one (352 pp.) trimmed quarter-inch at fore edge and, inexplicably, a quarter inch at bottom of its first 160 pages which are also a little darkened and somewhat foxed. Scattered foxing mostly confined to margins of remaining pages (both volumes). Endpapers creased, bindings a bit scuffed; altogether about very good.
