About This Item
[Boston]: Harvard University, [ca. 1945]. One-off. Folio (11 x 14 inches) . One leaf of printed text, 11 leaves bearing am original (but for one) silver gelatin photograph of a Harvard Mathematics professor. Full crushed red morocco, covers with four gilt rules, front cover with gilt initial G.P., mulberry endpapers, all edges gilt. In the original felt-line and morocco-edge slipcase of gray cloth. A beautiful item.At first glance, one is tempted to think that the Universxity paid for this souvenit on the death of Putman but the lettering on the only text leaf and some dates of certain professors give doubt to that idea. The text leaf reads "To Our Friend and Benefactor through Many Years, George Putman, from the Mathematics Department at Harvard University as a Token of Respect and Appreciation." Putnam, who famously married Amelia Earhart, died in 1950.
